Pipette Filter
Used in DNA amplification and microbiological sample-analysis procedures, Porex’s pipette filter helps prevent instrumentation contamination and trace carryovers that can invalidate experimental results. The filter exemplifies how Porex combines form and function to improve product quality.

Design Challenge:
Pipette and pipette tip manufacturers required an efficient pipette tip aerosol filter that would protect liquid samples and liquid handling equipment from aerosol transfer contamination. This is especially important in critical DNA amplification and microbiological procedures where minute trace carryovers can invalidate experimental results.
Solution:
Porex selected blends of polyethylene materials to minimize restrictions in airflow while creating superior aerosol filtration capabilities. The filter is designed to protect against “over-pipette” conditions using the naturally hydrophobic nature of the polyethylene along with the proper pore size to help prevent liquid incursion. Proper sizing of the filter for a good press fit to help prevent by-pass as well as high volume automatic assembly requirements were also taken into consideration by the engineering team.
Result:
Porex’s porous plastic pipette filter helps prevent trace carryover and instrument contamination caused by aerosols generated during sample. The finished product in its assembled form is an excellent example of Porex’s ability to combine form and function in the same part to improve product quality.
