Window Nib

Porex helps a major manufacturer of office supplies develop a new highlighter with a transparent window that allows the user to view both the line being written and the text beneath. The manufacturer sees top-selling results when the product is marketed.

Design Challenge:
A major manufacturer of office supply and home office writing instruments contacted Porex about developing a new highlighter. The concept featured a viewing window for the writer to see the line being laid down and the text beneath. The challenge was to manufacture a nib of unusual geometry so that it could be assembled with a clear transparent window at a reasonable cost.

Solution:
Porex worked closely with the manufacturer’s engineering department to develop a U-shaped nib that would efficiently wick ink from the reservoir to the head and incorporate the clear viewing window. The concept called for a nib and Porex engineers were able to design the product so it could be manufactured at a reasonable cost with the existing manufacturing processes and technology.

Result:
The highlighter was introduced at a writing instrument show and immediately became a top-selling product for the manufacturer.
