The majority of the products manufactured and sold by Porex are designed and molded products. Custom products are produced from captive production tooling - so production rights belong exclusively to the owner of the production tool. The balance of Porex's sales fall into the standard products category. For the most part, these products include sheet, tube, and rod geometries.
A die-cut solution is a very economical way to satisfy design requirements not needing a three-dimensional geometry. Tooling costs for such a solution may only require the purchase of a custom die. The down side to a die-cut solution revolves around scrap rates. In those instances when the annual volumes of the Porex die-cut part are high, a custom molded solution may provide material savings that can be applied towards the purchase of a production tool. For the most part, yes. Some of the more brittle sheet materials (PP, PE/PP Copolymer, and Nylon) exhibit tougher die-cutting challenges. Parts die-cut from these materials often times exhibit rougher edges due to their material properties.
