What is POREX Porous Media?

POREX Porous Media feature an intricate network of open-celled, omni-directional pores that offer exceptional performance on and below the surface. These pores, which can be made in average pore sizes down to one micron, give porous plastics their combination of filtering capability and structural strength. The term "open-cell" is often used to describe a porous material whose pore structure allows for fluidic communication throughout the part (meaning air or water can travel through the part from one side to the opposite side). This flow is made possible due to the material's open-cell construction illustrated by the Spherical Particle Process animation below.

While specification of Pore Size and Pore Volume is not required to initiate a development project with Porex, an understanding of these terms will make communication throughout our development process more efficient and effective. The Pore Size / Pore Volume tutorial has been created to better define the terminology commonly used with Porex's porous materials.

Many of the raw materials used in the production of POREX Porous Plastic have been certified by the raw material suppliers as compliant with USP Class VI requirements, meeting FDA requirements in the Code of Federal Registration, 21 CFR 177.1520, for food contact, including cooking applications, and many components have been used in liquid filtration devices that carry NSF certification. In development projects requiring NSF approval, Porex will work in conjunction with the NSF to help usher an application through NSF certification process.

The technical information presented is intended as reference information only and in no way should be regarded as a limit or a constraint to our development capability. The material conditioning processes utilized by Porex to ready a polymer for use in the manufacturing process is considered proprietary. Therefore, Porex does not sell raw material for use in any external operation.
